Where are my basic girls at?!

If you are anything like me, you absolutely LOVE fall! And by fall I don’t mean our typical Alberta Fall (snow in September and less then a week of beautiful autumn leaves). I mean the gorgeous Fall we’ve been experiencing this year. Among the craziness of 2020, we’ve been so lucky to have one of the best Septembers in years. Mild temperatures and daily walks through the endless orange leaved landscape of the Edmonton River Valley with baby Ruby have made this a Fall to remember.

Guess what though … I just jinxed our fall. The minute after I wrote this, we received our first snow of the year :( After crying a little, I remembered not all good things about Fall are lost. No matter what the weather, there’s one seasonal aspect that never ceases to let us down. PUMPKIN.

4 SNEAKY BENEFITS OF PUMPKIN FOR YOUR GUT

High in fibre

Fibre helps feed your gut bacteria and helps keep you regular. Soluble fiber absorbs water and is then fermented by bacteria in the digestive tract to support a healthy gut. Insoluble fibre provides bulk to the stool and speeds up the time it takes for your food to pass. This helps to avoid constipation, bloating and indigestion.

Potassium

Potassium helps with communication between the brain to muscles located in the digestive system. These signals encourage contractions that help the digestive system break down and send food along so it can be digested. Optimal digestion is needed for a good gut!

Magnesium

Magnesium is important for regulating muscle contractions. This includes peristaltic movement that moves food along your gut as it is digesting. Magnesium is also important for nervous system regulation. It calms your nervous system to help you relax and sleep. Good quality sleep is key for good gut health as regeneration of good gut microbes occurs during this time! It’s caffeine free, so try drinking my PSL to help you relax before bed!

Vitamin C

Vitamin C has been known to help with constipation. if you are constipated you are not eliminating toxins properly which can be causing stress on the gut. If you are experiencing constipation and are not getting enough Vitamin C through food sources, a supplement may be required.

PSL (dandy blend edition)

Ingredients

1 tbsp dandy blend

1 tbsp stevia (or sweetener of choice)

1 tbsp collagen

1 tbsp pumpkin puree

1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice

1.5 c dairy free milk (I prefer macadamia nut)

DIRECTIONS

  1. Warm dairy free milk on the stove in a pot.

  2. Mix all ingredients together using a frother, immersion blender or regular blender.

  3. Sprinkle pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon on top if desired. Sip + enjoy!


NOTES

* if you don’t like/have dandy blend on hand, swap it with cocoa powder! If you prefer a less bitter taste add a bit less cocoa and sweetener to taste.

*if you don’t have collagen - you can omit it, although I highly recommending adding it to your pantry as it’s great for your gut!
