4 things I don't believe anymore when it comes to gut health + metabolism...

Information on gut health and metabolism is ever-evolving and ever-changing. With more understanding of how the body works, our physiology and the gut, we can improve how we address our system to find balance. Your body wants to be in balance. That is why it communicates to you through symptoms like bloating, not waking up hungry, cravings, constipation etc. so YOU can make a change.

Here are 4 things I used to believe that I no longer do. They might change your life too!

Intuitive eating is the way to make peace with food.

It sounds like a dream doesn’t it? To be able to eat when you are hungry, stop when you are full, and feel satisfied and in control! I thought so too. And then was sneaking 12 chocolate chip cookies a day from my freezer stash in the name of “intuitive eating.” My body wanted cookies! Not really…. What my body really wanted was nourishment! Intuitive eating is what our bodies are MEANT to do, but when your body is in an imbalanced state it won’t work. It’s hard to distinguish hunger cues from, cravings or you might not even be getting hunger cues. We need to start with INTENTIONAL eating. When your digestive system is balanced, intuitive eating will come! Peace with food will come as you learn how to eat, and what you are eating, and remove the restrictions around food.


Meatless Monday.

I hopped on this trend for a while, thinking I was doing my body good. When in reality, I was doing my body dirty. Meat is good for more than just Iron. It has so many nutrients, no matter how hard we try or how healthy we eat, we cannot get from plants. Meat is easy to digest, our bodies absorb the nutrients easily and it is the best source of protein. You need more protein than you think - even if you aren't a gym rat.



Remove your foods sensitive for life.

So you are sensitive to dairy… just cut it out then right? I don’t know about you but cutting dairy out of my diet seems like a terrible solution to me. Dairy, when tolerated is one of the most nutrient-dense foods you can consume. Food sensitivities are typically a gut issue, not a food issue. Fix your gut so you can eat the foods you love!




Sugar-free is better.

When I was deep in my dieting days…sugar-free foods were the magical answer. I could have all the sweets I wanted WITHOUT the sugar or calories! It seemed too good to be true. Built bars, Halo top, Perk energy, sugar-free coconut syrup to sweeten my yogurt and so much more. I was still always bloated and gassy, my stomach hurt and I always felt like I was running to the bathroom. I couldn't figure out what food was making me feel like crap..it wasn't just after certain foods. It was all the time. And I always wanted more treats! Turns out, sugar alcohols and artificial sweeteners disrupt your gut bacteria!  These sugar-free alternatives ferment in your gut making you feel bloated and gassy and sending you running to the bathroom with diarrhea. Your body can’t actually break “zero calorie” sugars down.
